Live freely in the sub topical climate Whitehaven home.
The Mackay Region, located on the Coral Sea coast of Queensland is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia, making it one of the sweetest places to be! With its beautiful beaches, reefs and tropical rainforest, you’re sure to fit right into this 2 bedroom High Physical Support house. Shopping centre, taverns, boat ramps, beach and other amenities are only a short drive away when you live in Mackay.
Due to its sub-tropical climate, average temperatures range from 30C in summer to 23C in winter, you’ll never freeze. The sub-tropical climate also means you’ll be itching to explore all the region has to offer like Eungella National Park, the Great Barrier Reef and many heritage listed sites.
Eungella National Park homes many plants and animals which are specialised to the area, including the Eungella day frog and the Eungella honeyeater. Due to its location the boundary between subtropical and tropical rainforests blurs, and it supports species from both vegetation types. While much of Eungella is isolated due to dissecting gorges, some areas are still available for bush walks, camping and picnics.
One of the 7 wonders of the world, The Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300kms and is the largest coral reef in the world, visible even from space! The Mackay Region is one of the most popular places to see the reef, with daily cruses taking off from Whitsundays and Mackay. The area of Mackay City was originally inhabited by the local Yuibera people, who’s language closely related to the geographically close Biri dialects. Captain Cook sailed past the Mackay coast on 1 June 1770 and named several landmarks including Cape Palmerston, Slade Point and Cape Hillsborough. It was during this time which Sir Joseph Banks briefly recorded seeing Aboriginal people for the first time. European settlement started in 1864, with the first allotments being sold. As the area was already inhabited, there were several clashes between the two groups for Mackay over the coming years.
The Sugar City’s first crop was planted in 1865, and quickly became the city’s bread and butter which still rings true to this day, however mining also now contributes a large chunk to the economy.
The Mackay Region, located in paradise is the perfect place for a sea change, feel the wind, smell the ocean and take in the beauty around.
