If you’re wondering, “How do I get SDA funding?” this guide will walk you through the process, key steps, and resources to help you navigate the complexities of SDA eligibility.

Step 1: Getting Started with the Access Request Form and NDIS Plan

Before diving into SDA eligibility, you’ll need to obtain an NDIS plan. This begins with the Access Request Form, a document that the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) uses to determine your eligibility. Your NDIS plan outlines your goals and the supports you need. Every plan is unique to each individual, and you can check your eligibility before completing the form.

Step 2: Completing the Access Request Form

The Access Request Form has two sections—one you complete and one filled out by a treating professional, like your GP or psychologist. You’ll need to provide evidence of your age, residence, and lifelong disability. Local Area Coordinators (LACs) can help you with the form, making sure you include all necessary details.

LACs are valuable guides throughout your NDIS journey. They can assist with completing the Access Request Form and help you access the NDIS and other supports. Even if you’re not eligible for a NDIS plan, they can connect you to alternative resources. LACs can also provide your NDIS plan in accessible formats, such as braille or audio.

Step 5: NDIS Assessment and Approval Timeline

Once you submit the Access Request Form and reports from your treating professional, the NDIS will review them. If they deny SDA eligibility, you can request a reassessment. The NDIS has 21 days to accept any change in circumstances and 28 days to consider your SDA application. These response times are laid out in the Participant Service Agreement. Unfortunately, there is usually a backlog for decisions, and they can take up to 12 months.
