The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is dedicated to safeguarding the plans, funds, and personal data of NDIS participants. As part of this commitment, changes are being made to enhance the security of the sign-in process for accessing the NDIS app and portals through myGov accounts.
Why the Change?
Previously, participants had the option to use secret questions and answers to verify their identity when signing into myGov. However, this method is being phased out because answers to these questions can often be easily found online, putting your accounts and funds at risk.
To improve security, NDIA is now requiring participants to update their two-factor authentication (2FA) settings. This will provide more robust protection and ensure your data is secure.
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
2FA is an extra layer of security used to ensure that people trying to gain access to an online account are who they say they are. Instead of just asking for a username and password, 2FA requires a second piece of information, which could be something only the user has (like a phone or a code-generating app).
There are three common types of 2FA methods:
- SMS Codes: A one-time code sent to your mobile phone via text message.
- Authenticator Apps: Apps like Google Authenticator or the myGov Code Generator that create time-based codes for signing in.
- Passkeys or Biometrics: Using a device’s security feature like fingerprint scanning or facial recognition.
By requiring two factors—something you know (your password) and something you have (your phone or an app)—2FA makes it much harder for hackers to access your account, even if they’ve stolen your password.
What Happens Next?
The NDIS soon disable the option to use secret questions and answers for accessing NDIS portals and the app. If you haven’t updated your MyGov sign-in settings by then, you won’t be able to access these services until you complete the update.
If you’re unsure whether you’re using secret questions and answers or need assistance updating your settings, you can check your account settings in the myGov app or online by visiting Manage sign-in details on the myGov website.
For further assistance, you can:
